The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) publishes a report every six months on international direct investment (IDI) worldwide. The April report highlights the key findings regarding IDI on an international scale. The main points are as follows:
- Global Rebound in Investment Flows: Global foreign direct investment (FDI) rose by 15% in 2025 to reach $1,660 billion (a moderate increase of 6% when excluding fluctuations in a few volatile European economies).
- Top 3 Global Destinations: The United States ($288 billion), China ($80 billion, rebounding after three years of decline), and Brazil ($77 billion) rank as the top recipient countries.
- Key financial drivers: The global recovery was driven primarily by an increase in intra-group lending and a rise in profits reinvested by multinational corporations.
- Decline in New (Greenfield) Projects: Projects to expand production capacity have stalled globally, with a 3% decline in capital investment and a 14% decline in volume, hitting the manufacturing sector in developing countries particularly hard (-44%).
- Megaprojects Focused on Technology and AI: Advanced economies are attracting massive investments, driven in particular by a $43 billion project in France (an AI data center) and six projects totaling $100 billion in the United States (semiconductors).
- Cautious Outlook for 2026: Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and prolonged inflationary pressures (particularly those related to energy prices) could have a negative impact on future investment momentum.
